In conjunction with XXChange, Baltimore Women’s Maker Collective is organizing “Flipping the Narrative” a symposium of woman-identifying and non-binary artists and makers, hosted at AREA 405.
Come bright and early for free coffee and snacks provided by the radical wimmin of Thread Coffee!
The symposium will begin with a gallery tour of the work featured in XXChange. XXChange jurors Myrtis Bedolla, Breon Gilleran, and Megan Van Wagoner and AREA 405 gallery director Stewart Watson will discuss the juror selection process as well as their methods of and perspectives on curation, art collection, and exhibition installation.
Myrtis Bedolla will moderate a panel discussion “Art & Craft”. The topic of art and craft is a very heated one in both arts and crafts worlds, which these days at least appear to be completely separate communities with separate schools of thoughts. The artist looks down on the artisan who is beholden to the material while the artisan scoffs at the artist’s heady concepts and lack of “skills”. How can these two worlds intersect, when should they, and why?
For lunch, BWMC’s favorite chef, Heather Smith, will be selling delicious home-made meals.
Megan Van Wagoner will moderate “Transforming Materials”. How do artists push the limits of the material they work, physically and conceptually? We will explore the value of challenging traditional methods of creating. Why is materiality still an important factor in art making when so much art being made is focused on experience and digital media?
Finally, Allison Gulick will lead “Exploring Gender Through Practice”. We’ll discuss the ways in which identity, sexuality, and gender intersect in artists’ methods of research, experimentation, relation and creation.
